Frequently Asked Questions
How are you different than other physical therapists?
I am not different than other PTs, but I am one who tries to stay true to the core values of our profession. I believe excellence is lost when patients are treated as productivity goals in many practices. Therapists many times cannot utilize their full skillset and most effective tools because of time constraints, or because their interventions are not reimbursable by insurance. What my practice model can provide that many cannot, is a very safe and private environment where you are the sole focus, allowing me to practice at the top of my scope and license.
Do you take my insurance?
I do not bill insurance because I am not in network with insurances and have no relationship with Medicare. Tao of Physical Therapy is a Fee-For-Service practice, also known as a Cash-Based practice. However, if you have Out-Of-Network benefits for specialists, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement through your insurance company. I am also a certified Tri-Care Non-network provider, so some Tri-Care plans may have OON benefits that are reimbursable for my services.
I provide superbills (itemized receipts) for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement at your request. Tao of Physical Therapy is on Reimbursify, so it only takes a few minutes to check if you have OON benefits and to submit claims! Click the Reimbursify button on this page, or contact me for help with this.
If you prefer to use your In-Network or Medicare benefits, I am more than happy to refer you to great providers who accept your insurance.
What is the benefit of being Out-of-Network?
he Fee-For-Service model improves access to care. I believe that Physical Therapy services should be available when you need or want it. In an Insurance-Based model, you typically have to obtain a PT referral to use benefits before making an appointment with the PT office to schedule your initial evaluation. This may be weeks or months since the initial onset of your issue. On the provider end, reimbursement from insurance continues to decrease, so clinics have to increase volume by maximizing scheduling—including double and triple booking patients—and decreasing the time and personalized care they offer. At Tao of Physical Therapy, I am committed to giving you my full attention for the entire session.
I increase the value of our appointments by developing a solid plan for you between sessions and using the secure portal on the website portal to track exercise progressions and how you are doing. My goal is not to get you the office multiple times per week. I want you to have the tools to work on your goals and be self sufficient as soon as possible. This practice model also allows me to treat the entire body system, not just the site of injury or concern, so that we can address you holistically and the root cause of your issue. Insurance companies usually only reimburse treatment for exactly what is on the prescription.
Ultimately, I do believe that there are great clinicians in Insurance-Based practices. If you would prefer to use your insurance benefits, I can help recommend you to someone who accepts your insurance.

Do you offer discounts?
Yes! I have discounted rates when you purchase 5 or 10-visit packages. These visits do not expire, and cannot be tranferred to another person. Please check the booking page for details.
I also offer a Concierge Plan, which is a monthly recurring subscription. This allows you to book me as needed, and is priced to support ongoing care! When you sign up for this plan, you can just message me any time you need to come into the office, or check in virtually via Telehealth call. Concierge visits, like the daily visit options, are limited to one booking per day, and subject to the same 24-hour cancellation policy.
How is payment taken?
Payment will be collected at the time of your appointment, but you can also prepay if booking online. I accept most major credit cards. PT services may also be eligible for your HSA and FSA, but check with your employer or plan.
Invoices can also be paid online through the patient portal on any device. I can accept in-person payments with contactless methods, including Tap and Digital Wallet. (Sorry, no Chip or Swipe methods!) Cash is also acceptable with exact change. Receipts and/or superbills will be emailed and available in the secure portal.
Who can receive physical therapy services?
I will not turn away patients and clients who require help. However, if the treatment you need is beyond the physical therapy scope of practice, or beyond the capabilities of this facility or myself, I will refer out to the appropriate provider.
Tao of Physical Therapy is also an inclusive and safe environment, as healthcare is fundamentally inclusive. I reserve the right to refuse service to any individual who obstructs the practice of these values. Tao of Physical Therapy is a member of the Safe Space Alliance.
Do I need a referral?
South Carolina allows for provisional direct access for physical therapy. Doctor's referrals or prescriptions for PT are not required to receive an evaluation and initiate treatment. However, it is recommended to see your physician if your condition does not improve after 30 days. A physician's referral may be required to receive Out-Of-Network reimbursement.
What can I expect on the first visit?
On your first visit, you may need to fill out forms if you have not done so online. Be sure to bring a valid ID, and your prescription for PT, if available. The evaluation will consist of an interview so that you can describe your complaints and difficulties, followed by functional testing and measuring your abilities. We will set goals and a plan together. Treatment will also be initiated on the first day to facilitate your rehabilitation process. On future visits, we will dive deeply into our treatments and get you down the road to recovery.
What should I wear?
Clothing that you can move freely and exercise in is recommended. Ideally, clothing that can easily be moved to expose the body region that requires treatment on. I have treatment gowns for those who need it.
How long do I have to keep coming to physical therapy?
You, as the patient, will ultimately have control of how frequent or how long you want to receive therapy. After our initial evaluation, we will discuss an estimated management time for the condition you are coming in for, and a treatment plan. Progressive neurodegenerative conditions will never go away, so therapy may be ongoing, so ongoing therapy for maintenance and check-ups will be highly recommended. I feel that, regardless of condition, physical therapy should be viewed like going to a dentist, where you have routine maintenance. The physical body should require the same care as for your teeth. Under this practice model, we do not discharge, but rather plan for maintenance, so that you continue to care for your body and maintain function as long as possible.
Important Policy Information:
All appointments are fee-for-service. Payment will be collected at the service time.
Tao of Physical Therapy, LLC is not in-network with insurances. A superbill of services may be provided if you have out-of-network benefits. Service coverage and rates for reimbursement are determined by your insurance provider.
Referrals: South Carolina is now a direct access state. Doctor's referrals/prescriptions for physical therapy is not needed to receive an evaluation or treatment. However, it is recommended to see your physician if your condition does not improve after 30 days, or if continued treatment is out of PT scope of practice. A referral may be required to receive Out-Of-Network benefits.
Cancellation Policy: Please give at least a 24 hour notice for cancellations to be respectful of the provider and allow for another patient to make an appointment.
